I’m delighted that my submission to photographers:network was chosen for a solo show at Art Galerie Siegen. The show is bringing together parts of City of Ambition, Archetypes and Cityscapes. Main theme is the horizon blending sky and ground into one. Introductory speech at the opening by Kirsten Schwarz, art historian.

Thomas Kellner invites every year personally known colleagues for a group show in his studio. Most of them he has met at exhibitions, meetingplaces or artfairs around the world. Submissions came this year from more than 60 photographers from 17 countries. The exhibition shows work by 18 photographers. Each photographer is represented by one selected picture: Tatyana Bessmertnaya, USA, Max de Esteban, Spain, Luis Delgado Qualtrough, USA, Marie Docher, France, Odette England, UK, Lorena Guillen Vaschetti, Argentina, Jenny Gummersal, USA, Laura Heyman, USA, Thomas Kleynen, Germany, Monika Merva, USA, Inger Lise Rasmussen, Denmark, Ellen Rennard, USA, Jutta Schmidt, Germany, Karen M. Strom, USA, Michael Wagener, Germany, Donna J. Wan, USA, Ewa Monika Zebrowski, Canada, and myself.

This year’s jury was formed by Thomas Gerwers, PROFIFOTO, Manfred Zollner, fotomagazin, Christoph Tannert, Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin and Helga Oberkalkofen, Art Galerie Siegen. Thanks for selecting my project and thanks for the invitation to submit.

EXHIBITION: “THE FAMILIAR IN THE FOREIGN – A NEW ASIAN PHOTOGRAPHY”, BANGKOK ART AND CULTURE CENTER, BANGKOK, THAILAND

“How does a photographer describe and feel about a culture or a society in which he lives, but that perceives him as alien?” Based on this question, curator and photographer Wolfgang Bellwinkel has selected works of nine Western photographers with a strong link to Asia.This group show is organized and funded by Goethe Institut Thailand and curated by Wolfgang Bellwinkel (Berlin/Bangkok). Thanks everybody involved for putting this wonderful exhibition together.

Rara is a new nicely printed art and architecture magazine from Guatemala City. The director is fellow artist Andres Asturias whom I had the pleasure to meet during my stay in Guatemala City. I’m happy to have a spread of City of Ambition in Edition Nr. 3 (March 2011) accompanied by an excerpt of the wonderful essay Bill Kouvenhowen wrote for the City of Ambition book.

Thanks to La Fototeca who invited me over for workshop, speech and solo show I had the opportunity to photograph in Guatemala City. The project is named Aurora after the city’s airport and consists of cityscapes.

Every year the vfg (Association of Creative Photographers Switzerland) is organizing the Young Swiss Photographers Award for students and graduated artists not older than 40 and practicing not more than three years. Together with Christoph Kern, Roman Weyeneth, Susanne Martinez and Heike Grasser I have the honor of taking on this task. With this year’s catalog we are happy to begin a cooperation with Benteli Publishers, Switzerland. And thanks to all our sponsors!

The jury for the 15th award was formed by Thomas Kellner, Germany, Jule Reuter, Germany, Lars Willumeit, Christian Helmle and Andrea Muheim, all Switzerland, who nominated 10 projects and selected the four winners.

The first exhibition venue was at Photogarage, Zurich, the next stop will be Basel-Land Art Museum. There we will also exhibit fresh work by the previous 14 winners as we are having our 15th jubilee this year.

Another yearly award stemming from the vfg’s efforts for the discussion of high-end photography is the ewz.selection (formerly The Selection vfg) which brings together 18 projects from the categories Fine Arts, Fashion, Advertisement, Architecture, Editorial and Free. Submissions are accepted by all photographers living in Switzerland and Swiss photographers living abroad.
I had the honor of being part of the strategy group of this year’s issue together with Romano Zerbini (organizer), Walter Keller (gallerist) and Sascha Renner (journalist and critic).The show was on for 10 days and gave home for exciting presentations by practitioners and panel discussions with experts. Highlights were the speeches given by Mark Power, Magnum/UK, and by Joachim Baldauf, Germany.
Part of the event is also the Swiss Portfolio Day, a two day portfolio review with mostly reviewers from Switzerland but also a fair amount from reviewers from other countries.
A big “Thank you” to Romano Zerbini for organizing such a powerful event.

AT LILLE ART FAIR, FRANCE WITH MAISON DE LA PHOTOGRAPHIE

I got to know Olivier Spillebout, director of Maison de la Photographie Lille, last year during my exhibition at Transphotographiques, a perfectly organized festival of very high standard. This brought us to a further cooperation during the sister festival Transfotografia in Gdansk, Poland, and finally to City of Ambition being chosen for their booth at Lille Art Fair.
